Event: 07/23/2007
Employee Is Cut in the Face by a Grinder Blade

On July 23, 2007, Employee #1, a farm worker, was using a DeWalt 5-in. hand- held grinder to grind off material on a piece of equipment. The circular item had been secured in a vise and as the employee began his work, a piece of the 7-in grinding wheel, that had been installed in the grinder, broke off and flew through the face shield he was wearing. The piece of the grinding wheel became embedded in the right side of his face. The Woodland Fire Department responded and arranged transportation to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. The employee sustained major trauma to the right side of his face, including the loss of his right eye. Employee #1 was hospitalized for a week.
