Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202485314
Event: 05/10/2007
Employee Is Burned by Energized Electric Line

On May 10 , 2007, a plastering foreman and a coworker were working from the top level of a multiple story scaffold erected on the corner of a commercial building. The foreman was installing 10-foot-long galvanized "stucco stops" around the perimeter of the parapet wall. Needing an additional section, he walked around the corner of the building to where a small pile of stucco stops had been placed. He picked up one stop and began carrying it back, diagonally over his shoulder, to his work location when one end of the stop came in contact with an energized, overhead 12-kilovolt overhead power line. Protective devices on the line deenergized it, freeing the employee, but it took the coworker to keep him from rolling off the scaffold. The Sacramento City Fire Department responded and after rescuing the employee from the scaffold, arranged transportation to UC Davis Medical Center. The employee sustained serious burns over the upper part of his body for which he was hospitalized.
