Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202485249
Event: 04/01/2007
Employee's Leg Is Crushed by Tractor

On April 1, 2007, an employee, a supervisor, was observing the planting of safflower in a field. A tractor was pulling a no-till hitch and seed drill through the field but was experiencing clogging of fertilizer injector knifes. The employee climbed onto several boards that had been secured to a CPH-15 no-till hitch and where the injector knifes had been mounted. While standing on the board as the tractor continued through the field, he slipped and his foot made contact with a tire associated with the CPH-15. He was pulled off the boards and fell between the hitch and seed drill. The tractor driver saw the incident and immediately stopped the rig preventing further injury to the employee. The emergency personnel arrived and the employee was airlifted to UC Davis Med Center in Sacramento. He sustained a severe fracture to his left leg that required surgery and was released from the hospital on April 5.
