Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202466686
Event: 05/06/2008
Employee's Finger Crushed by Rollers

A sign painter was cleaning the rollers on a Walco coating machine (Serial No. 5839, Model No. 67A1). He was using a small piece of cardboard to clean paint off the moving rollers and using his right hand to push the paint from between the moving rollers. His hand was pulled into the rollers. His right middle finger was fractured, and the tip of the finger was amputated. The employee did not realize that his hand had been crushed in the rollers until he saw blood. He put a rag on his hand and raised his arm to stop the bleeding. Two employees took him to the restroom, bandaged his hand with gauze, and drove him to a clinic. The clinic staff x-rayed and bandaged his hand and referred him to a specialist. The injured employee saw a surgeon, who treated his injury and, 2 days later, performed surgery, including middle finger debridement, V-Y flap closure, and skin graft. The employee was released the same day.
