Employee Suffers Heat Exhaustion While Working on Farm

On September 7, 2007, an employee was working for Joma AG Service, a farm labor contractor. Around 9:00 a.m. the employee felt dizzy and was instructed to stop work and take a break. At 11:00 a.m., the employee continued to work and fainted around 12:45 p.m. when she was taken for medical care where she was treated for possible heat exhaustion and released. The employer had an operative Injury and Illness Prevention Program and heat illness prevention program. The employee had some training in heat illness prevention and was provided water, breaks and ample shade. However, training was not inclusive of all elements including importance of notifying employer of symptoms which may have prevented her collapse.
