Employee Amputates Finger in Milling Machine

At approximately 6:30 p.m. on August 17, 2005, Employee #1, a machine operator, was assigned to operate a metal milling machine in the attempt to shape a metal part. He reached into the point of operation to feel the machined part to determine if it was smooth. While moving his left index finger along the machined part, he came into contact with the spinning cutting tool on the operating mill. This contact resulted in a serious laceration of his finger and a shattered finger bone. Employee #1 was transported to Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in Woodland Hills. As a result of his injury, the finger tip could not be repaired, and the finger tip was surgically amputated. He was hospitalized for treatment.
