Employee Loses Finger in Mowing Accident

At approximately 8:35 a.m. on February 24, 2011, Employee #1 was operating a lawn mower at a residential site. Due to the moist condition of the soil and the tall grass he was cutting, Employee #1 stated the task was difficult that day, constantly stopping to remove the grass and soil that clogged the mower blade underneath. According to Employee #1, he was unclogging the mower blade every ten feet of distance mowed. At the time of the accident, Employee #1 was removing the clay soil and grass that clogged the lawn mower blade using his hand. Employee #1's left hand got caught in the blade amputating his index, middle and ring fingers. Before cleaning the power lawn mower blade, Employee #1 said he pulled the lever disengaging the blade but did not shut off the engine. Employee #1 was taken to local hospital, where he was kept for four days.
