Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201127149
Event: 07/24/2009
Employee's Foot and Arm Are Fractured by Falling Object

At approximately 11:00 a.m. on July 24, 2009, Employee #1 was attempting to remove the cables hidden behind countertops. Four or five countertops made of granite, approximately 250 pounds each, were leaning against a wall. Employee #1 attempted to reach the telecommunication cable faceplate to remove the cables but the countertops were blocking access. He and a coworker stood the countertops straight up and they started to tilt towards them. They both struggled to push the countertops back to the wall but they were too heavy. The coworker told Employee #1 to let go, assuming he would quickly pull out before they fell on him. Employee #1 was struck by the countertops while he was trying to run away. He was hospitalized with a fractured foot and arm.
