Investigation Summary

At approximately 3:40 pm, on March 1, 2008 a fatality accident occurred. An electrical power generating station, which was hosting a benefit concert and potluck for the children's aid group the Richstone Foundation. The driver, an unemployed wife of a member of the band which was to play at the benefit volunteered to drive the band's van back up to the loading dock to unload the equipment. The driver was unfamiliar with the van and hit the accelerator instead of the brake, crashing through some display tables, cooking equipment, and ultimately running completely over a 22- year old female, an employee of the Outback Steakhouse Restaurant, Torrance Del Amo Mall who was donating her weekend as a volunteer at the benefit. Her manager, who was also a volunteer, was performing administrative functions upstairs and heard the crash. He ran downstairs and called 911. The benefit was canceled. Neither the driver nor the victim were employed at the benefit and neither were receiving any compensation for their services. The victim was pronounced dead of massive crush injuries at Little Company of Mary Hospital upon arrival.
