Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201179322
Event: 02/27/2006
Employee Is Struck by Metal Coil and Suffers Crushed Pelvis

On February 27, 2006, Employee #1, a laborer, was searching for a coil of metal used in the production of metal roof panels. As Employee #1 walked down an aisle with stacked coils on either side, a coil later estimated to weigh approximately 4,600 pounds slid off the stack and struck him. The employer's own investigation determined that a much smaller coil had been placed just below and to the side of this larger coil. The weight of the larger coil began to flatten out the smaller coil and this flattening process reached a point that the larger coil slid off, striking Employee #1 before falling into the aisle. Employee #1 sustained fractures to the pelvic area and was hospitalized for approximately 2 weeks before being transferred to a convalescent facility where he spent several months.
