Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201178118
Event: 05/12/2005
Employee severs thumb with chop saw

On May 12, 2005, Employee #1, a carpenter, was cutting a piece of base board trim with a 10-inch Dewalt chop saw. The chop saw was powered by a generator and as Employee #1 was cutting, the generator slowed down, which caused the saw blade to bind. Employee #1 was holding the base board with his left hand and as the blade began to bind it rotated the base board toward the blade and pulled Employee #1 into the blade, amputating his thumb. Emergency services were called and Employee #1 was hospitalized for treatment where his thumb was reattached.
