Worker Amputates Finger While Unclogging a Food Dispenser

On December 28, 2008, two workers were employed by a commercial bakery that produced foods such as cookies, cakes, and muffins that were sold in convenience stores. Employee #1 and Employee #2 were using a cord-and-plug-connected Edhard (Model MKV, Serial Number 1092) tabletop depositor, but it clogged. Without turning off the depositor or unplugging it, Employee #1 placed her right index finger into the dispenser opening to clear away a lump of sugar that jammed the gears. At the same time, Employee #2 accidentally pushed the remote control for the depositor, causing the gears to turn. The tip of Employee #1's finger was cut off by the moving gears. Employee #1 was taken to a local hospital, where treating physicians trimmed bone and wrapped it. She did not require hospitalization.
