Employee Is Injured While Changing Tire

At approximately 7:00 a.m. on November 12, 2008, Employee #1, with Avis Budget Group, Inc., was assigned by his immediate supervisor to relocate rental vehicles back and forth from a maintenance area. While he was waiting for a ride back, he noticed an SUV had a flat tire. Employee #1 drove the SUV to the maintenance department and began to change the flat tire himself. Employee #1 removed the jack and required tools from the trunk of the SUV and proceeded to loosen three lug nuts on the wheel. Employee #1 used the jack to lift the car and removed the lug nuts and wheel. While struggling to place the spare tire and wheel on, his head become trapped between the wheel well and the top of the spare tire. Simultaneously, the SUV began to slip off the jack. Employee #1 yelled for help and was assisted by coworkers. Employee #1 was treated at a nearby hospital for a neck sprain and a right ear contusion.
