Two Carpenters Sustain Fractures When Roof Trusses Collapse

On July 22, 2005, Employees #1 and #2 were working as carpenters 22 feet above the ground. They were stacking 0.5 in.-thick sheets of 4 ft by 8 ft CDX plywood on unsheathed wood flat roof trusses. The trusses were not adequately nailed or otherwise secured to the ledger. The added weight of the plywood caused the trusses to become unstable. They collapsed, and Employees #1 and #2 fell to the ground. Employee #1 sustained a fracture to his hip, and Employee #2 sustained a fracture to his foot or ankle. Both were hospitalized.
