Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 101752160
Event: 08/12/2005
Employee electrocuted while connecting residential power

On August 12, 2005, Employee #1, a residential wire electrician, was making a heat-up connection at the pedestal for a home site. The pedestals being used each carried two meters for two different residences. The temporary power had been powered from the pedestals. Employee #1 took out the temp he believed was connected to the lugs he needed, but found that it was not. He then took off the top cover and removed both meters. After disconnecting the other temp and moving it in the pedestal, he replaced one of the meters, but not the cover. His apprentice had already stubbed the supply conductors into the bottom of the pedestal, and was standing behind Employee #1 when he attempted to attach the neutral conductors into the lug, which was lower and back from the front of the pedestal. Employee #1 suddenly went stiff. The apprentice grabbed him and pulled him back from the pedestal. He had been electrocuted, as reported by the El Paso County coroner's office.
