Event: 10/03/2005
Loader Operator Is Killed When Silo Collapses

At approximately 10:53 a.m. on October 3, 2005, Employee #1 was working as a contractor preparing to remove old silage stored next to a farm silo that was to be demolished. The silo was 50 feet tall and 20 feet wide. A 20 foot long by 8 foot wide section had been removed from the base of the silo on its northwest side. The owner was placing the silage next to the opening, and Employee #1 was moving it to another location on the farm. To remove the silage, he was using a front end loader with no rollover protection. The silo shifted and then collapsed toward the northeast direction, striking Employee #1 as he was at the controls of the front end loader. He was trapped between the steering wheel of the front end loader and the silo above him. He was killed. The cause of death was positional asphyxia.
