Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202354817
Event: 09/13/2005
Employee Amputates Hand in Machine Accident

On September 13, 2005, an employee was inspecting the blades of an AEW saw machine for proper alignment and operation. While portions of the AEW saw line were shut down and locked out, the in-feed conveyor, which fed hams through the saw, was not locked out. Suddenly, the employee's loose fitting cloth jacket got caught in the gears, which controlled the in-feed conveyor. The gears pulled in his right forearm and hand, causing crushing injuries, which resulted in amputation of his lower arm. The employee was hospitalized.
