Employee Is Burned When He Falls In Hot Cooking Oil

On February 4, 2005, Employee #1, of Walmart store #5046, was one of the evening shift deli employees. They were emptying the used cooking oil from the deep fat fryer. According to the employees, the deli manager recommended that the employees use a plastic 30-gallon trash can on wheels instead of the designated cast iron caddy for this purpose. During the second trip to the used oil holding tank at the back of the store, the trash can collapsed, possibly when the wheels hit a floor drain. The hot cooking oil spilled out, and Employee #1, who was transporting the oil, fell down and into the oil, He sustained burns to his arms and hands and received a slight splash of oil on his face and neck. The local EMS was called. A helicopter transported Employee #1 to the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center at the University of North Carolina. Employee #1 was hospitalized overnight.
