Investigation Summary
Employee #1 was walking from one job to another. He was walking Eastbound with the walk sign, in the southern crosswalk across North 6th Avenue in Renton. The traffic signal light turned green at the same time that the pedestrian walk signal turned white, saying "walk". A school bus was stopped at the red traffic light, eastbound in the curbside lane, waiting to turn right. Heavy morning rush hour traffic was southbound on Park Avenue to the bus drivers left. When the light turned green, the bus driver stated he glanced both ways and that he did not see anyone in the crosswalk, so he proceeded to turn wide right, heading Southbound on Park Avenue. The school bus and Employee #1 were both observed directly by a witness. The direct witness stated that he observed both the driver and Employee #1 and from his direct viewpoint, was startled when he realized that the school bus was in motion headed toward Employee #1. The bus driver was not turned or looking toward the crosswalk where Employee #1 was crossing. Employee #1 was at or below the bus windshield line of sight on the bus passenger side, and did not see or hear the school bus approaching from behind or his left side when he was in the crosswalk. The bus swung wide right to make the turn and did not slow according to the witness statement. Employee #1 was struck and run over by the bus and was pronounced dead at the scene.
