Event: 05/07/2004
Employee dies when porch collapses

On May 7, 2004, an employee, a carpenter and maintenance worker was sent to investigate a repot that the front porch of the single story dwelling was broken. Upon arrival, the employee noted the right hand post, one of two supporting the approximately 83-in. by 112-in. peaked porch roof that reportedly weighed approximately 1,200 lbs needed repair. The employee left the site and obtained the materials needed to effect repairs. Upon returning, a coworker was steadying the unbroken L.H. support post while the employee was attempting to place support 2-in. by 4-in under the R.H. side. The employee did not know that the 2-in. by 6-in. beams were not secured in their beam pockets. The porch pulled away from the dwelling, fell, struck the employee in the head, and killing him.
