Employee Sustains Amputation When Struck by Saw Blade

At approximately 8:30 a.m. on January 17, 2007, Employee #1 was working at the discharge end of the (molder) machine removing cut lumber that had been processed. Employee #1 observed that a piece of lumber became stuck during the cutting process, and lifted an (unsecured) solid metal guard and attempted to remove the stuck piece of wood. Employee #1's right middle finger came in contact with the (energized) saw blade. Employee #1 sustained an open fracture to his right middle finger when it came in contact with the energized saw blade during a cutting operation. Employee #1 sustained the amputation of his finger but was not hospitalized.
