Employee's Leg Is Amputated When Pinned Between Forklifts

At approximately 9:50 p.m. on January 17, 2007, Employee #1, a temporary employee, was working as a laborer at a warehouse distribution center owned and operated by a secondary employer. A coworker assigned to operate a powered lift truck to retrieve bundles of products a several doors east of door Number 17, where Employee #1 was working, backed into the right side of a momentarily parked powered lift truck. Employee #1 was standing and talking to the operator of the parked lift truck. The coworker move the vehicle in reverse, was not paying attention to the direction of his travel, and was driving at an unsafe speed. The force of the backing lift truck pinned Employee #1's left leg against the right side of the other lift truck and caused a crushing injury. Employee #1 suffered the amputation of his left leg, underwent surgery and was hospitalization for six days.
