Employee Suffers Heat Exhaustion

At 11:30 a.m. on July 27, 2006, Employee #1 and four coworkers were unloading wooden kitchen cabinets from a truck. They were all temporary workers and had been working for five hours. Employee #1 went to get another drink of water, when he collapsed from heat exhaustion. The supervisors on duty noticed the employee was not feeling or looking good and called for emergency assistance, when he fainted. Employee #1 was transported to the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California, where he was hospitalized for three days. Witnesses stated that the employer encouraged employees to drink plenty of water, take as many breaks as necessary, and stay in the storage unit that is open to the air as long as required for them to cool down from unloading the truck. The employee had been observed drinking water throughout the day.
