Investigation Summary
At approximately 1:14 p.m. on May 24, 2006, Employee #1, an inmate firefighter, and training personnel were hiking along a pre-established hiking trail. After traveling 1.5 miles, Employee #1 became ill and could not continue the hike. The other members of the crew assisted in removing his personal protective equipment and cooling him down. Emergency medical personnel were summoned and arrived via air transportation. They transported him to a medical center. At the hospital, he received medical treatment for heat stroke. He was hospitalized and then released eight days later. The weather conditions in the area and at the time of the incident were as follows: temperature: 87 F, relative humidity: 29, wind speed: 7 mph/gusts of 13 mph, direction: west (269 degrees)
