Employee Amputates Thumb When Radial Saw Jumps

At approximately 1:00 p.m. on January 10, 2006, Employee #1 was working as a carpenter for Pelletier & Leathead General Contractor, Inc., in Bermuda Dunes, CA. He was a regular employee. He was cutting a piece of wood when his radial saw, such as a Skilsaw, jumped. The blade came into contact with the thumb on his left hand, amputating it. Employee #1 was hospitalized. The saw was properly guarded, and the guard was not wedged back.
