Employee Is Injured in Fall from Structure

At approximately 8:30 a.m. on August 30, 2005, Employee #1, a framer at a commercial construction project, stepped onto an unsecured 6-inch by 12-inch by 18-foot-long beam that was cantilevered out 6 feet from the edge of the structure. The beam was not securely braced or supported. The back end of the beam kicked out, and the employee fell with the beam approximately 20 feet, landing in sand. He fractured both heel bones and his left thumb. He was transported by emergency services to Mission Hospital in Orange, CA, where he was admitted for surgery and hospitalized for six days.
