Event: 01/30/2008
Cabinet Maker Cuts Cuts Right Index Finger

At approximately 4:06 p.m., on January 30, 2008, Employee #1 was working for Detail A Studios, Inc., as a cabinet maker in San Francisco. Employee #1 was operating a twelve-inch "CTD" cutoff saw in the shop. Employee #1 was crosscutting a "slider" or "cleat" for a drawer. The "cleat" was 20 in. by 3in. by 0.875 in. thick. Employee #1 was ready to cut another piece. As Employee #1 turned on the saw, his right hand unknowingly moved towards the blade. The blade cut into his right index finger between the first and second knuckle. Employee #1 turned the saw off and applied pressure on his finger. A coworker standing behind him realized what had happened, went to get a rag and called the Emergency Medical Services. Employee #1 was taken to Ralph K Davies Medical Center. He was hospitalized for two days. Subsequent surgery was performed to reattach nerves and skin grafting. There were no witnesses to the incident. The company president, coworkers and Employee #1 were interviewed. The saw had an operating guard and no violations were observed. The employer engaged in manufacturing customized wooden cabinets.
