Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201183563
Event: 05/08/2007
Employee's Thumb Is Cut by Power Hand Saw

At approximately 11:50 a.m. on May 8, 2007, Employee #1 was cutting pieces of redwood siding. The redwood siding was 10 ft long by 9.5-in. wide by 0.75-in. thick. He placed a board onto two sawhorses and nailed it to both of them. Employee #1 started ripping the wood and had cut approximately 8 ft. A cut board dropped off the bench onto the ground and he stopped the saw. His right hand was on the saw and he took his left hand off the saw and lifted up the cut board. He held and stabilized the board with his left hand with his thumb across the board. He started the saw with his right hand, and the saw caught the piece of wood, kicked back, and cut the top of his left thumb.
