Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202354528
Event: 04/20/2004
Employee lacerates hand with saw

On April 20, 2004, Employee #1, a carpenter, was using a Hitachi Slide Compound Miter Saw set up on a portable work table to make a 45-degree angle cut on a length of base board stock, which was 9.5-in. wide by 87-in. long. He was going to cut approximately 0.5 in. off of the board end. However, he made a mistake of not tightening down the saw clamp, which prevented the blade from swiveling side to side. As he was cutting, the blade began to swivel to the side and jammed in the wood. He attempted to raise the saw up quickly but the entire board raised up jamming the blade. As a result, the blade cut several inches into Employee #1's hand, between the middle and ring fingers of his left hand.
