Employee Injures Hand While Repairing Compactor Chain Drive

On August 11, 2005, Employee #1 was operating a Ploog mechanical compactor when the chain drive and sprocket jammed. He switched off the machine and opened the protective cover that houses the chain sprocket transmission assembly, and reached in. As he grabbed the chain drive and wriggled the chain facing towards him, the chain engaged and pulled his hand into the running nip point between the sprocket and chain in a counterclockwise direction. To release his hand, Employee #1 placed the compactor into the "ON" position to move the chain in a clockwise direction. Employee #1 was hospitalized and treated for the amputation of his index finger at the second joint, and a skinned middle finger on his left hand.
