Employee dies after being struck by track hoe

On January 8, 2004, Employee #1, a superintendent with Building & Utility Contractors, Inc., walked from one side of a track hoe to the other side. The track hoe operator could not see Employee #1 in this position because his view was blocked by the boom. The operator picked up the boom and swung it around to the rear of the track hoe, striking Employee #1, knocking him down. The operator then backed the track hoe over Employee #1's left leg. He was taken to the hospital where his leg was amputated. Employee #1 later suffered a heart attack, developed pneumonia, and died on January 28, 2004.
