Investigation Summary
Employee #1 was working for a food service contractor at a medical center. The company had three electric-power-driven mobile carts in the food service section. The food service employees used these carts as their transportation to deliver food to the patients, nurses, and other staff members ordering food in the compound. The mobile carts were not maintained in safe running condition and exposed employees to a serious physical injury from mechanical failure of the carts. At approximately 3:00 p.m. on August 13, 2006, Employee #1 was driving Company Electric Mobile Cart Number 24, Model Number B-210, manufactured by Taylor Dunn, from the front gate to the office when the cart hit the curve and flipped over. Employee #1 was thrown out of the cart and the cart struck her. Employee #1 sustained a dislocated hip, a shattered pelvic bone, and fractured hip bone. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
