Investigation Summary
At approximately 10:00 a.m. on September 21, 2005, Employee #1, a Public Works Maintenance Worker III, was assigned to work on the Bulky Loads Unit Truck. This unit picks up large bulky items from homeowners that are too large to place in their regular trashcans, such as furniture or large appliances. The trash truck has the loading bin in front of the cab of the truck, where the driver's seat and passenger seat are situated above and forward of the front of the wheel axel. Employee #1 was sitting in the passenger side of truck. Employee #1 and a coworker were in route on a small residential street, when his coworker, who was driving the truck, slowed down to make a right hand turn, and was preparing to stop. The coworker heard Employee #1 cry for help. The coworker looked over at the passenger side of the truck but did not see him. The coworker immediately stopped and got out of the truck and went to the passenger side of the vehicle, only to see that he had run over Employee #1. His right leg was pinned under the right front wheel of the truck. The coworker got back into the cab and reversed the truck off of Employee #1 and called 911 for help. Employee #1 was stabilized and transported by the paramedics to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where he was admitted and remained there for 7 days.
