Investigation Summary

At approximately 11:00 a.m. on July 15, 2004, an employee of James V. Kirk & Ernestine I. Kirk dba J.V. Kirk Tree Service was approximately 50 feet above the ground in a tree using a handsaw to cut branches. The employee stood on limbs facing the tree. As the employee reached around the tree to secure his belt, the limbs broke. The employee fell through the limbs below and landed on his feet. The impact shattered his legs and back. One wrist was also fractured in the fall. Employees on-site rendered first aid until an ambulance arrived. The employee was transported to Albany General Hospital, Albany, OR and was then transferred to OHSU Medical Center Trauma Unit, Portland, OR.
