Investigation Summary
On October 14, 2003, an employee was part of a carpentry crew assigned to frame the exterior and interior of a two-story single-family dwelling that was irregularly shaped. The house was approximately 46 ft long and 36 ft wide. The employee was nailing the exterior sheathing on a 9-ft high and 21-ft long front section of wall that was lying on the first floor subfloor before erecting it. Near the front center of the dwelling was an L-shaped floor opening that was approximately 8-ft by 9-ft at its longest dimensions. The employee had finished nailing a section of sheathing to the framing when he stepped backwards and fell through the unprotected opening. The employee fell falling approximately 8 ft, 10 in. to the concrete basement floor. The employee sustained a fractured back, as well as numerous cuts and abrasions. He was hospitalized and treated for his injuries.
