Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201096955
Event: 10/31/2003
Employee's finger is amputated by pinch point

At approximately 11:45 a.m. on October 31, 2003, an employee was attaching an agricultural trailer to a tractor. He was struggling to attach the trailer to the tractor on an uneven ground surface. The trailer shifted and moved towards the rear of the tractor catching his finger in the pinch point. The trailer's hydraulic brake system was activated during tractor braking by the momentum of the trailer traveling towards the rear of the tractor. The tongue of the trailer was held stationary at the tractor hitch but the trailer moved forward, sliding over the tongue and activated the brakes. A pinch point existed between a collar over the tongue and a hexagon bolt head which was located on the top of the tongue. The employee pinched off the top of his right hand middle finger. Initially there was no bone lost but a small amount of bone subsequently was removed to repair the tip of the finger. The employee was not hospitalized.
