Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 100553833
Event: 02/19/2003
Employee killed when struck by vehicle

At approximately 8:00 a.m. on February 19, 2003, Employee #1 of BFI Waste System was riding on the back of the company's solid disposal and collection truck. The truck stopped to pick up garbage on LA 984, in Erwinville, Louisiana. The collection truck was located in the northbound lane of the two-lane highway. Employee #1 dismounted the back of the collection truck and crossed the highway to a private drive to collect garbage. This required Employee #1 to cross the southbound lane. Once Employee #1 collected the garbage from the driveway, he stepped back into the southbound lane. He took approximately two steps when a vehicle traveling south in the southbound lane struck him. Employee #1 was thrown 114 ft from the point of contact. He was killed.
