Investigation Summary
At approximately 6:30 a.m. on August 23, 2002, Employee #1 and a coworker were working at a 12-acre-logging site that had about a 30-degree-slope. Employee #1 was using a Stihl chain saw and a Caterpillar log skidder to fell trees and then move them out. Approximately 45 minutes later, the coworker found Employee #1, injured and unresponsive, lying 75 yards inside the perimeter of the site, 5 ft away from the log skidder. Additionally, a broken, 5-inch-diameter tree branch lay between the stump and the felled tree. Emergency services were contacted and Employee #1 was transported to Stanley Memorial Hospital, where he was transferred, by helicopter, to Carolinas Medical Center, where he died. The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office reported that the cause of death was from blunt force injury to the head.
