Investigation Summary
At approximately 10:00 a.m. on November 21, 2002, Employee #1 was standing behind a large oak tree waiting for a coworker to cut another oak tree that was to be felled. Employee #1 was standing approximately 70 ft away from the tree that was to be felled, and 3 ft away from the place where the cut tree was to fall. He apparently thought that standing behind the tree that was 3 ft away from where the cut tree was to fall would provide protection from the falling tree. While cutting the tree, the coworker observed that Employee #1 slipped and his head stuck out past the tree he was standing behind. Since the cut tree was already falling, a limb struck Employee #1 on the head and killed him.
