Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 200231306
Event: 12/24/2002
Employees injured when wooden truss collapses

On December 24, 2002, Employee #1, #2 and another coworker were constructing a residential building. From the roof, they installed wooden trusses with the assistance of a crane. After positioning one of the trusses, they began to attach it to the frame of the roof. Employee #2 was sitting at the top of the eve, as Employee #1 and the other employee were attaching the braces along the sides of the trusses. As they installed this truss, it became unstable and collapsed. Employee #2 jumped from the top of the eve and landed upon the ground, breaking his ankle. Employee #1 fell through the ceiling framing onto the cement flooring, fracturing wrist bones in his right wrist, and sustaining a compound fracture in the left ulna. Both employees were transported to a medical center. Employee #2 was treated and released, while Employee #1 was hospitalized.
