Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201036753
Event: 11/05/2004
Employee's injures hand when it tangles in saw blade

At 8:25 a.m. on November 5, 2004, Employee #1, a packer/crater working for Boeing Co. in Seal Beach, CA, was cutting a 4 ft by 8 ft by 0.75 ft piece of plywood on a 10-in Tilting Arbor Saw, manufactured by JET Equipment & Tools, Model JTAS-10-3, and serial number 911728. Due to the size of the plywood board, a coworker was assisting Employee #1 in supporting the material on the discharge side of the saw. Employee #1 was wearing leather gloves to avoid splinters from the plywood. At the end of the cut, Employee #1 got his gloved right hand caught in the saw blade. A push stick was available to feed the plywood through the saw but Employee #1 did not use it, believing that the size of the board allowed him to keep his hands safely away from the blade. Employee #1 suffered lacerations in his index and middle fingers and amputation in the first digit of his ring finger. Employee #1 was treated at a hospital for his injuries. The table saw was equipped with a splitter, an anti kick-back device, and a plastic guard along the top of the area where the material was fed to the saw.
