Employee Finger Is Amputated in an Ice Cream Machine

On December 3, 2003, Employee #1, a manager for a snack store that sold, Italian ice, teas, and ice cream. The accident occurred in the kitchen which was approximately 600 square ft, and housed the Italian ice, ice cream makers, and the clean-up facilities. Employee #1 was cleaning an EXTRAGEL, Model Number 28-35 Vertical Batch Freezer, manufactured by CRM. Employee #1 was holding a spatula and emptying a bucket of water into a bucket from a mixing basin that was approximately 4 ft by 3 ft by 3 ft when she lost her balance. While Employee #1 was falling, the spatula hit the on switch, activating the beater blades of the ice cream machine. Employee was trying to break her fall when her left hand entered the exit port, amputating the left index finger. Employee #1 was hospitalized and treated for her injuries.
