Investigation Summary
On October 31, 2003, an employee was using a table saw to make a rip-cut along the grain of a 2-in. by 4-in. by 16.75-in. piece of lumber. The table saw was manufactured by Delta Machinery, Model Number DB 9I35, and Serial Number 34-450. There was no guard or spreader on the table saw at the time of the accident. While the employee was pushing the piece of wood against the rotating blade to make the cut, it kicked back and the piece flew out of his hands. This unexpected event caused the employee's right hand to come in contact with the blade. The employee suffered a deep laceration to his right palm, which included considerable nerve damage. Surgery was required and he was hospitalized for six days.
