Employee Is Injured in Truss Collapse

On September 30, 2002, Employee #1, a roofer for a subcontractor, and four coworkers were building roofs for a townhouse complex. The owner and foreman of the subcontracting company had constructed a jig in the complex lot so they could construct the roofs while on the ground. The bracing for the roof trusses consisted of two poles staked approximately 1 foot into the ground, and then braced and anchored into the asphalt road with 3-inch concrete nails. As a secondary safety measure, the foreman had C-clamped one of the braces to an adjacent garbage dumpster. Employee #1 and the coworkers were successful in building two complete roofs in this manner and were beginning to work on the third roof when a driver from the dumpster company arrived to empty the dumpster. The foreman removed the C-clamp that was holding one of the braces to the dumpster. The clamp was never replaced. The crew resumed setting roof trusses in the jig and had approximately seven trusses in place when the trusses began to topple over. Employee #1 was installing bracing and securing the trusses together when they collapsed on him. He sustained minor abrasions and contusions but did not seek medical attention.
