Investigation Summary
On September 25, 2002, Employee #1 was walking to the east end of the road construction zone to get a rubber-tired roller. There was a form trailer, a pickup truck, and a cement mixer in the lane in which he was walking, so Employee #1 turned to check if any vehicles were coming in the inside lane. He saw a backhoe and a dump truck moving behind him in the same direction he was going. Employee #1 began walking in the inside lane and was passed by the backhoe. He was turning to see the location of the dump truck when the corner of the truck's tailgate struck his upper shoulder and back causing him to fall to the ground. Employee #1 rolled to get out of the way but his left arm was run over by the dump truck. He was hospitalized with his injuries. The driver of the truck had not seen Employee #1.
