Employee Is Injured in Trench Cave-in

On July 3, 2002, Employee #1, an excavation contractor, was using a backhoe to dig a trench at a new single-family home construction site. When the excavation reached the 12-ft depth, he climbed into the unprotected trench and used a probe to locate a 4-in. sewer pipe in order to make a connection. A portion of the excavation caved in, trapping Employee #1. He called out to workers on another site, who summoned emergency responders. After extrication, Employee #1 was taken to a hospital for treatment of bruises and a fractured knee.
