Employee Amputates Right Thumb in Machine

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on July 17, 2002, Employee #1 was attending the hob cutter in on the Liebherr Hob Machine. He had the machine operating at approximately 235 RPMs. Employee #1 reached into the area of the cutter with his right hand with a 2 lbs. lead hammer to tap on the arbor to bring it into tolerance according to the indicator reading. The lead hammer came in contact with the cutter, pulling his hand down and pinching his right thumb against the hob slide. This action resulted in the avulsion, the amputation of his right thumb.
