Event: 02/21/2002
Employee Amputates Thumb and Three Fingers Using a Saw

On February 21, 2002, Employee #1, a carpenter, was using an unguarded table saw. He apparently ripped strips of 3-inch-wide particle boards and reached behind the blade to remove the piece being cut. The piece jammed in the saw blade, causing the saw to kick back, which forced his left hand into the unguarded saw blade, amputating his thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers on his left hand. Employee #1 was hospitalized to treat his hand.
