Investigation Summary
On November 17, 2000, Employee #1 was operating an international tractor while pulling an AVCO New Idea Number 327 Corn Picker, SER Number 250906 to cut down the corn stocks and harvest the ears of the corn. As he was driving the tractor, he noticed that the corn picker had ceased in harvesting the corn. He stopped the tractor, but kept the engine running. Then he walked to the back of the picker, and as he looked into the picker, he found debris jammed within its rotating parts. While freeing the debris, his leg became caught in its rotating parts and pulled him into its rotating shaft and chains. Another individual found him partial imbedded within the picker and turned off the equipment, then summoned the emergency medical services. They arrived and transported him to the hospital. As they drove him to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries and died. He had lost large quantities of blood due to the amputation of his left leg.
