Investigation Summary
At approximately 2:00 p.m. on August 31, 2000, Employee #1 and coworkers were repairing the roof of a residence in Kipling, NC. They had just finished lunch and Employee #1 climbed two ladders, the first to gain access to the porch roof, and the second to gain access to the upper roof. Upon reaching the upper roof, he dropped his hands to his sides, fell backward onto the upper roof, bounced, and fell 9 ft onto the porch roof. He landed on his back and then fell 14 ft from the porch roof into some bushes. CPR was administered at the scene and Emergency Services arrived within 4 minutes, but Employee #1 was pronounced dead. Apparently he had a diseased heart and was taking medications (nitroglycerin) for heart disease. Based upon eyewitness accounts that Employee #1 did not try to break his fall and that he kept his hands at his sides, the medical examiner felt that he sustained a heart attack or fainting spell prior to falling off the roof.
